More than a few massage therapists claim to perform Medical Massage. By definition, medical massage is a therapeutic massage prescribed by a physician and performed following the directives of that physician. Medical massage does not refer to any specific treatment method and can include various massage protocols and modalities. Medical massage is outcome-oriented instead of time-oriented. That means that instead of booking a client for a 50 or 60 or 90-minute session and working on their entire body with a little more emphasis on the back, neck or other affected area and charging your standard rate for a relaxation massage, the medical massage therapist will treat only the part of the body that the physician prescribes treatment for and can bill according to a usual customary rate schedule, adjusted by the region of the country that you live in. This will allow many therapists to more than double the amount they earn per session.
A medical massage practice can produce an income commensurate with what your services are worth. Because insurance plans allow for maximum reimbursement for your services, medical massage practitioners are compensated on par with other medical professionals, such as chiropractors and physical therapists. Medical massage practitioners are not confined to working in doctor's offices, although opportunities abound in this area. Our Medical Massage Practitioner Program will give you the knowledge and confidence to work together with physicians in your own independent practice.
Many massage therapists have discovered that by becoming a Medical Massage Practitioner, they can build the type of practice they have long dreamed about. Since all of their patients are referred by doctors, the therapist does not have to do much in the way of marketing. Referrals from just one doctor can easily fill the practice of a sole practitioner and can set you on your way to opening an independent clinical practice. Without the burden of searching for new clients to get on the table, massage therapists are free to concentrate on what they know best: getting people well. Because many health insurance plans cover physician-prescribed massage, your practice extends far beyond just the wealthy individuals who largely support a cash-based practice. You can help many more people.
The LMT Success Group is the world's largest provider of Medical Massage education. Our Medical Massage Practitioner Program consists of 40 hours of post-graduate training. We have trained over 10,000 massage therapists worldwide. Many have become the most successful and sought-after massage therapists in their communities. (Read Success Stories)
A Certificate of Completion and a Medical Massage Practitioner standing is granted after completion of all six of the classes listed in the Program Structure section, below. The classes may be taken independently or combined for discounted tuition. The classes can be taken in any order and at any location. We maintain a small student to teacher ratio so that we are able to work hand in hand with students so they are able to achieve mastery of the course objectives. No examinations are required. No renewals are necessary. The Medical Massage Practitioner Program does not supersede the laws of your state. You must be licensed, certified or otherwise duly authorized to perform massage therapy in your state in order to practice as a Medical Massage Practitioner.
In its entirety, the Medical Massage Practitioner Program is a 40-hour educational program that is made up of two levels: the Professional Level and the Masters Level. Each level consists of three classes totaling 20 hours of education. In our "weekend" format, each level has 2 classes that are taught on a Saturday (12 hours) and one class (8 hours) that is taught on a Sunday. The levels are taught in hotel conference rooms over weekends approximately 3-5 weeks apart.
We also have an "immersion program" where both levels are taught consecutively in one single week. You can take the entire program in a single week at these locations: our Las Vegas Success School and on an Education Vacation in Costa Rica. You may also be interested in taking some of all portions of this program on a Seminar at Sea. Class schedules vary by cruise.
The Professional Level consists of three classes: Insurance Billing (4 hours), Day of the Neck (8 hours) and Day of the Back (8 hours). In our weekend format, the Insurance Billing class and the Day of the Neck class are held on a Saturday and the Day of the Back class is held on a Sunday.
The Masters Level also consists of three classes: Posture & Pain (4 hours), Upper Extremity (8 hours) and Lower Extremity (8 hours). In our weekend format, the Posture & Pain class and Upper Extremity class are held on a Saturday and the Lower Extremity class is held on a Sunday.
The tuition for the weekend program is $195 for each day of education. The classes may be taken individually and CE hours are issued for each class taken, but the full certification is granted only if all six classes are completed (Exception: see "Insurance Billing Option" below).
