FAQS ABOUT PENNSYLVANIA MASSAGE THERAPY LICENSE RENEWAL:

When is the renewal deadline? All Pennsylvania massage therapy licenses expire on January 31 of odd-numbered years. The last day to renew for the current period is January 31, 2027.

How do I renew my license? Renewals are processed through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS).

  • Official Renewal Portal: pals.pa.gov

  • Login: Use the credentials provided by the PA Department of State. If you have forgotten your login, use the “Recover” feature on the PALS homepage.

  • Important Note: A CE provider cannot renew your license for you. You must log in and complete the renewal application yourself.

What are the Continuing Education (CE) requirements? Most therapists require 24 hours of continuing education directly related to massage therapy. These must be completed within the two-year cycle (Feb 1, 2025 – Jan 31, 2027). Please check with your Board if you are newly licensed or are in an inactive status.

  • Total Hours Required: A minimum of 24 hours directly related to massage therapy, out of which 16 must be live/contact hours. The additional 8 hours may be earned via online home study.
  • At least 4 hours in Professional Ethics are required.
  • PA Act 31 makes all health-related licensees “mandatory reporters” who must complete 2 hours of DHS-approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting training every renewal. The CE provider must report these hours directly to the Board. This can take 7-10 days to appear in your PALS account.
  • Licensees must have a current CPR Certification. These hours do not count toward your 24-hour total.

How Long Should I Retain my Certificates of Completion? Keep your Certificates of Completion for at least 5 years. You may be subject to a random audit by the State Board.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

  • Inactive Status: If you wish to stop practicing, you must notify the Board during renewal or via a notarized statement to move to “Inactive” status.

  • Late Renewal/Reactivation: You may reactivate an expired license within five years by following the Board-approved reinstatement process.

  • Waivers: If you cannot complete your hours due to illness, military service, or hardship, you must request a waiver in writing at least 60 days prior to the expiration date.

  • Legality: It is illegal to practice massage therapy in Pennsylvania without a valid, active license.
