Arthrossage

Arthrossage

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five adult Americans suffers from arthritis. It is, in fact, the most common type of disability. There are specific manual therapies that are known to be able to address pain and stiffness and yet very few massage therapists have the skill and credentials to treat it.

Arthrossage is different from the more traditional Swedish or Deep Tissue massage. This is a clothing-on treatment that focuses on increasing flexibility, lubricating joints and lengthening muscles. This type of treatment can be used in conjunction with a sports massage and may even be considered a helpful tool for arthritis prevention. As a massage professional, this is a great service to provide and a great treatment for your clients to receive.

In this two-day continuing education course you will learn about various forms of rheumatic disease and medical massage procedures for arthritis intervention and treatment. During this class, you will:

  • Learn to differentiate between various forms of rheumatic disease including Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fibromyalgia and Gout.

  • Be introduced to the autoimmune disease process.

  • Discuss arthritic symptoms and learn theories of causes of arthritic conditions.

  • Understand the indications and contraindications for touch therapies and treatment protocols when working with rheumatic conditions.

  • Explore exercise movement options for arthritic patients.

  • Understand how and why to use hydrotherapy procedures.

  • Learn to take an appropriate Intake/History outline.

  • Gain an understanding and be able to appropriately apply myofascial release techniques, trigger point work and other manual therapies.

  • Learn correct performance of joint mobilization techniques for clients with rheumatic disease.

  • View various hands-on demonstrations of manual medical massage protocols that are appropriate for clients/patients with arthritis and other rheumatic conditions.

  • Explore specific instructions for body mechanics and hand placements.

  • Become proficient in joint orthokinetics as applied to rheumatic disease clientele.

  • Engage in a hands-on exchange with other students and have the opportunity to give and receive treatments, ask questions and provide feedback.

  • By the end of this course, the massage practitioner will be adept at speaking about and working with arthritic conditions and be able to perform a full-body Arthrossage massage on a client/patient with arthritis and other rheumatic conditions.

  • Upon completion of this course, the student will feel more comfortable working with a team of rheumatologists and other physicians.

PREREQUISITE

Prerequisite: All of our classes are intended to serve as continuing education for massage therapists. All students must be licensed, certified, authorized, or otherwise credentialed to provide hands-on, manual therapy services in the state where they practice. All of our classes are approved by NCBTMB for CE hours. Most states accept NCBTMB hours. Some states may have different requirements or definitions of what is considered to be within the "Scope of Practice" for a massage therapist. If in doubt, please check with your state's Board of Massage. In some instances, advanced-level courses may have additional prerequisites that will be noted in the course description.

CLASS SIZES

All of our classes have minimum and maximum enrollments that can be accepted. If a class is getting close to being full, we may close online enrollment. If a class is closed online, you may still call us at #800-201-2247 to see if there are any additional spaces or to go on a waiting list. If you want to go, let us know!  On rare occasions, we do not meet the minimum number of enrollees or an unexpected situation occurs and we need to cancel or reschedule a class. Please confirm that your class will be going forward prior to making any non-refundable travel arrangements.

STAYING OVERNIGHT?

Aside from special events such as Success School and Education Vacations, we do not typically arrange sleeping rooms at our host hotels for weekend classes. If a room rate is not specifically noted in the class description below, please check your favorite discount travel website (hotels.com, trivago.com, expedia.com, tripadvisor.com, etc.) to see if better rates are available at the host hotel. Oftentimes the rates on travel websites are lower than what we are able to negotiate and our room block rates, if available, are subject to expiration. If a class location is not already listed, it will be added to this page as soon as it has been finalized. Enrolled students will receive an email reminder one week prior to the class with the location.
