Why should you take credit cards in your massage business? There are dozens of reasons. First and
foremost, research shows that credit card acceptance increases
both the probability and size of customer purchase. Sales
increase anywhere from 30% to 100% when the typical business
starts accepting credit cards. There is other research which
shows that even cash sales are increased by the mere presence of
credit card logos. In a study published in the book “Influence,”
by Robert Cialdini, the presence of Visa and MasterCard logos
increased cash sales by 29% even though credit cards were never
used! This is attributed to the enhanced credibility a business
establishes when they start accepting credit cards.
Now that even McDonald’s is taking credit
cards, massage therapists remain among the last holdouts amongst
business persons who do not accept cards, and this is much to
their detriment. Unlike McDonald’s, we sell a high ticket item,
typically $50 to $150 services, and as such our business demands
that we accept them. We also sell a highly profitable and much
in demand impulse item: gift certificates, and impulse purchases
increase 5 times when you accept credit cards. A typical day spa
will sell more gift certificates in a single day than a massage
therapist will sell all year, and the fact that they accept
credit cards is among the primary reasons.
Given these facts, why do so few massage
therapists accept credit cards? Well, most massage therapists
with offices do accept them, but the fact remains that most LMT’s operate home-based or outcall practices, or have low
volume part-time businesses. For these individuals, the expense
